Shakarpara are small bites made from gram flour dough, fried to a golden brown and dipped in sugar. A traditional Indian sweet made especially for Diwali, it is today enjoyed round the year, and is also popular among the Indian diaspora across the world. While the sweet’s name is said to be derived from the Persian word, ‘shekarpareh’, it is referred to with multiple names, including shankarpoli, shankarpali, khurma and lakdi mithai.
